Boils

Say Bye-bye to Boils!

Close up of skin with inflamed boil.Typically found in a hair follicle or a gland that has become infected with bacteria, Boils are often unsightly inconveniences that just plain get in the way. Aside from their nasty appearance, boils indicate a skin infection.

In most cases, boils will be noticed as inflamed or agitated skin that will later develop into a lump under the skin filled with pus. It is common to find boils in the following areas:

  • Face
  • Neck
  • Arms & Armpits
  • Buttocks
  • Vaginal Area

Under certain circumstances, you may hear a boil being referred to as a sty or carbuncle. A sty is when a boil is found on the eyelid, where as a carbuncle is when several boils emerge in a group – typically indicating a more serious infection.

Home Remedies or Call a Dermatologist?

If left alone, a boil oftentimes will resolve on its own. We advise against squeezing and/or lancing a boil or carbuncle yourself to release the pus and fluid. This can cause the infection to spread to other parts of your skin.

Home remedies for boils include:

  • Warm compresses several times a day to speed healing and relieve pain/pressure
  • Make sure to use a clean compress every time
  • See a dermatologist if the boil is persistent, is accompanied with a fever, or is located on the spine or face.
